AVIATION COMMITTEE recommends "ADVANCE AND DO PASS, DEBATE"
Mr. Mark VanLoh, Aviation Director, testified about this ordinance. Bob Langenkamp, Acting City Planning Director, also testified that this ordinance would free up surplus equipment left at the air base and that it could be sold to smaller municipalities within the area. Councilwoman McFadden-Weaver asked if it would be possible to free up some of the surplus equipment for use by neighborhood organizations for clean-up purposes. Mr. Langenkamp said he would check into the request for the councilwoman. Mr. Langenkamp also stated that with the acquisition of the property, the City of Kansas City, Missouri would own all of the property at the base. He explained that there were environmental issues that needed to be addressed. The City is working with the Air Force in trying to lobby federal funds for environmental clean-up. He stated that he would be returning to the council for additional actions and consideration with the development of the base. This item needed immediate consideration because there was a March 15th deadline involved. Otherwise the land would be put up for sale.
