RESOLUTION NO. 100524

 

Stating the Council's intent to provide funding for certain City services in connection with the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game to be held at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City in July 2012, and directing the City Manager to include funding for such City services in his 2012 budget.

 

WHEREAS, Allan H. Selig, Commissioner of Baseball, has recently announced that the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game will be held at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri in July 2012; and

WHEREAS, the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game activities will include, in addition to the All Star Game itself, the MLB Fan Fest (to be held at Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City), the Futures Game featuring top minor league prospects, the Home Run Derby and Workout Day, the All Star 5K/1K Fun Run, the All Star Red Carpet Show and the All Star Charity Concert; and

WHEREAS, the All Star Game and related activities will allow the public to participate in a unique once-in-a-lifetime All Star experience here in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the estimated direct/indirect economic impact of the Major League Baseball All Star Game to the Kansas City area is estimated to be approximately $50 million; and

WHEREAS, the Major League Baseball All Star Game and related activities will result in a world-wide focus upon Kansas City, including the broadcast of the All Star Game to a world-wide television audience; and

WHEREAS, in connection with the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game, the City of Kansas City will need to provide City services, including police, fire, traffic, EMS and sanitation services, to support the All Star Game and the related events and activities; and

WHEREAS, the Council believes that the financial and other benefits to be obtained by the City greatly exceed the anticipated costs of providing City services for the Major League Baseball All Star Game and related events; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the Council hereby expresses its intent to provide the necessary funds to provide City services, including police, fire, traffic, EMS and sanitation services, to support the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game, the MLB Fan Fest, the Futures Game, the Home Run Derby and Workout Day, the All Star 5K/1K Fun Run, the All Star Red Carpet Show and the All Star Charity Concert.

Section 2. That the Council hereby directs the Acting City Manager to include, in the submitted budget for fiscal year 2012, the necessary funding to provide City services, including police, fire, traffic, EMS and sanitation services, to support the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game, the MLB Fan Fest, the Futures Game, the Home Run Derby and Workout Day, the All Star 5K/1K Fun Run, the All Star Red Carpet Show and the All Star Charity Concert.
