RESOLUTION NO. 041229
Declaring November 17, 2004, as
National Geographic Information System Day.
WHEREAS, Geography
Awareness Week is November 15-21, 2004; and
WHEREAS, National
Geographic Information System (GIS) Day is November 17, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Geography
Awareness Week promotes geographic literacy in schools; and
WHEREAS, GIS is an important part of geography awareness; and
WHEREAS, a geographic
information system (GIS) is a computer-based location information system that
displays a variety of visual layers of data such as parcels, streets,
demographics, council districts, school districts, etc. Being able to see this
visual data with its related information gives the user much more information
about the location or data and decisions about what is happening and what can
happen at that location are based on an analysis of all of the information; and
WHEREAS, City staff
utilizes GIS to complete essential daily business in the Information
Technology, Public Works, Water Services, City Planning and Development,
Neighborhood and Community Services, Health, Environmental Management, and the
Public Safety Departments; and
WHEREAS, the City of
Kansas City Missouri is committed to expanding GIS to the schools and general
public in order to showcase real-world applications with GIS; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare November 17, 2003, as
National Geographic Information System Day in Kansas City, Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Gail Roper with the
urging of the Mayor and Council that all citizens participate in GIS Day
activities.
