RESOLUTION NO. 010665
Declaring Sunday, April
29, 2001, as ADA Awareness Day in Kansas City.
WHEREAS, the
Americans With Disabilities Act became law in 1990, providing people with disabilities
legal protections they previously had been denied; and
WHEREAS, today,
because of the ADA, Americans enjoy more rights and greater freedom in
employment, accommodations, accessibility, and Americans with disabilities are
being better integrated into the life of this Nation more than at any time in
our history; and
WHEREAS, ADA
Awareness Day is a celebration of the Americans With Disabilities Act and an
opportunity for people to learn about, promote and appreciate inclusiveness and
the power of law; and
WHEREAS, the
importance of the Americans With Disabilities Act is inestimable, and must be
accorded due respect. Americans with disabilities are no less citizens than
others, and deserve equal, just and accommodating treatment in all aspects of
life; and
WHEREAS, in
conjunction with ADA Awareness Day is the Great Walk, sponsored by the Muscular
Dystrophy Association. The theme of this years walk is Walk and Roll, a
theme promoting participation of people with wheelchairs. In this event,
everyone wins; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby declare Sunday, April 29, 2001, as ADA Awareness Day in
Kansas City; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Elizabeth Reinert and
Michelle Ohmes with the greatest respect and admiration of the Mayor and
Council for their support to the Americans With Disabilities Act.
