RESOLUTION NO. 010665

Declaring Sunday, April 29, 2001, as ADA Awareness Day in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, the Americans With Disabilities Act became law in 1990, providing people with disabilities legal protections they previously had been denied; and

WHEREAS, today, because of the ADA, Americans enjoy more rights and greater freedom in employment, accommodations, accessibility, and Americans with disabilities are being better integrated into the life of this Nation more than at any time in our history; and

WHEREAS, ADA Awareness Day is a celebration of the Americans With Disabilities Act and an opportunity for people to learn about, promote and appreciate inclusiveness and the power of law; and

WHEREAS, the importance of the Americans With Disabilities Act is inestimable, and must be accorded due respect. Americans with disabilities are no less citizens than others, and deserve equal, just and accommodating treatment in all aspects of life; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with ADA Awareness Day is the Great Walk, sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The theme of this years walk is Walk and Roll, a theme promoting participation of people with wheelchairs. In this event, everyone wins; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Sunday, April 29, 2001, as ADA Awareness Day in Kansas City; and
