RESOLUTION NO. 140635

 

Declaring the month of August 2014 as Charlie “Yardbird” Parker Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS; Kansas City Jazz ALIVE is a 501(c) 3 catalyst group organized to implement opportunities for the Greater Kansas City jazz community and its members work in concert to “Raise the Tide that Lifts all Jazz Boats”; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of Kansas City Jazz ALIVE is A-Building AWARENESS of the needs of the metropolitan jazz community, L-Serving as a LISTENING body, I-Providing a platform for the integration of IDEAS, V-Functioning as a VOICE for the jazz community, and E-Providing EXPOSURE to applicable resources for the Kansas City jazz community; and

 

WHEREAS; Kansas City Jazz ALIVE committee honors composer and saxophonist Charles Christopher Parker, Jr., for his musical contributions to the world. His music lives on, recognized as significant jazz standards among the world’s jazz community, and performed by musicians to this day. Parker along with such notables as Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell and Charles Mingus, who helped create a style of jazz known as Bebop; and

 

WHEREAS; Showcase Tribute Performances and Special Events are scheduled throughout August to include: August 14 through 30 at selected venues are the Blue Room, 12-Baltimore, Café Tio, Chaz, Zona Roza, Johnson County Community College’s Nerman Atrium, Green Lady Lounge, Broadway Jazz Club, the Majestic Steak House, the American Jazz Museum, the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center, and the Gem Theater; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council do hereby declare that the month of August, 2014 is Charlie “Yardbird” Parker Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the family of Charlie Parker and the sponsoring organizations with the testament of the Mayor and Council to the innumerable contributions of a Kansas City born jazz icon.
