RESOLUTION

Declaring April, 2016 as Jazz Appreciation Month and KC FilmFest's 20th
Anniversary.
WHEREAS, the KC Film Festival, the Office of
Mayor Sly James, KCMO Office of Culture & Creative Services and Visit KC’s
Media Office, came together to bring Donald Frank
"Don" Cheadle, Jr. to KC FilmFest 20th Anniversary featuring
new critically acclaimed film MILES AHEAD and welcomes Kansas City native
home; and
WHEREAS, MILES AHEAD is inspired by events in the life
of musician Miles Davis, a wildly no-holds-bar portrait of one of the 20th
century’s creative genius and career defining performance by Oscar nominated
Cheadle in the title role. He worked from the script co-written with Steven
Baigelman, and made his bravura directorial debut in this film at the Cinemark
Theater-4 Friday, April 15 at 6:45 p.m.,
during the KC FilmFest; and
WHEREAS, Lane-4
Property Group, 39Rainbow Restaurants and KC Jazz ALIVE celebrate NJAM concerts
on Saturdays at 3910 Rainbow Boulevard, 4:00 pm - April 09, Greg Carroll and
Midnight Blue Quartet, April 16, Hermon Mehari Quartet, April 23, Stan Kessler
and Sons of Brasil and April 30, features Elder Statesmen of KC Jazz Quartet;
and
WHEREAS, in 1940, Bernard "Step-Buddy"
Anderson, came to Kansas City and played trumpet for Jay McShann. In 1944,
Anderson was based in New York City and played with many including Billy
Eckstine. In St. Louis, Anderson was later diagnosed with tuberculosis. His
replacement was young trumpeter Miles Davis. Anderson’s trumpeting ability
ended and he switched to piano. Returning to Oklahoma City in 1980, he served
as local musicians' union president. His final years were spent writing and
performing with wife, Jackie Anderson, and performed at Mutual Musicians
Foundation, KC Jazz and 18th & Vine Heritage Festivals; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April, 2016
as National Jazz Appreciation Month and KC FilmFest's 20th Anniversary; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread
upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and a copy be presented to
Visit-KC, KC FilmFest, Lane-4 Property Group, 39Rainbow Restaurants, KC Jazz
ALIVE, Inc. and Elder Statesmen of KC Jazz, with the appreciation of the Mayor,
Council and citizens of Kansas City for the many contributions of the
organizations supporting the identified activities during the month of April.
