RESOLUTION NO. 001573

 

Congratulating Our Lady of Guadalupe School on the occasion of its 85th anniversary.

 

WHEREAS, Our Lady of Guadalupe School, originally established in 1915 at Belleview and 21st Street in Kansas City, Missouri, is celebrating its 85th anniversary; and

 

WHEREAS, Our Lady of Guadalupe School first began classes in two rooms of a store. The classes were taught by Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and the students were children who did not yet know English. Later, lay teachers assisted members of the community with English lessons. The school property, originally leased, was donated to the parish by Judge William T. Johnson; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1966, a new school was created through the consolidation of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sacred Heart and Cathedral schools. The new school was named Our Lady of the Americas, with classes meeting at Sacred Heart and Guadalupe; and

 

WHEREAS, the early 1980's saw the departure of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Loretto; the school preserved, despite structural deterioration. Repairs were made, and in 1981, the status of the school was changed from consolidated to parochial; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1991, the school entered a cooperative program with Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, and in December, 1991, the name was changed from Our Lady of the Americas School to Our Lady of Guadalupe School; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby salute and congratulate Our Lady of Guadalupe School on the occasion of its 85th anniversary; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Connie Bowman, Principal and Fr. Jim Betzen, Priest for Our Lady Guadalupe/Sacred Heart Church, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the many years of dedication given to the school and the wish for the schools continued success.
