RESOLUTION NO. 970439

 

Recognizing the week of April 13-19, 1997, as Crime Victims' Rights Week in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, there are almost 39 million people in America who are victimized by crime each year, with over 10 million falling prey to violence; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1996, violent crimes occurring in Kansas City, Missouri, numbered approximately 28,657; and

 

WHEREAS, law-abiding citizens are no less deserving of justice, rights, resources, restoration and rehabilitation than the violent offenders who victimize them; and

 

WHEREAS, every man, woman and child who is victimized by crime in America deserves to be treated with dignity and compassion, and deserves services and support to help them in the aftermath of crime; and

 

WHEREAS, as a nation devoted to liberty and justice for all, America must increase its efforts to protect, restore and expand crime victims' rights. The needs and concerns of crime victims deserve the attention and support of the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, VictimNet is joining forces with victim services program, criminal justice officials and concerned citizens throughout America to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council designate the week of April 13-19, 1997, as Crime Victims' Rights Week in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to VictimNet members.
