RESOLUTION NO. 060817

 

Congratulating Anthony S. Amato upon his selection as Superintendent of the Kansas City, Missouri School District.

 

WHEREAS, Anthony S. Amato joined the School District in July 2006, as Superintendent of the Kansas City, Missouri School District which serves nearly 26,000 children and employs more than 4,000 teachers and administrators at 71 school facilities; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Amato has an extensive background in education as well as demonstrated leadership and success implementing high standards for all students. He was most recently the Superintendent of the New Orleans (LA) Public Schools; an urban district serving 63,5000 students. From 19992002, Mr. Amato served as Superintendent of Hartford (CT) Public Schools and previously was Superintendent in the New York City Public Schools Community School District #6 from 1987-1999; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Amato graduated from Columbia University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science and Education, received a M.Ed. in Bilingual Education, Administration and Supervision from City College of New York in 1977, and currently pursuing a doctoral program at Columbia University; and

WHEREAS, for the first time in over 20 years and since the recent declaration of unitary status by the federal courts, the KCMOSD is able to determine its own destiny. The School Board has set a course for district improvements, which includes a comprehensive framework for reform of its high schools and, beginning this fall, its middle schools; and

 

WHEREAS, the School Boards strategic commitments has garnered the support of the business, civic, and philanthropic community. Now with Anthony Amatos leadership the KCMOSD has the opportunity to make unprecedented strides for its students and the community-at-large; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City community welcomes Anthony Amato, his wife, Iris, and his young children, who will be attending KCMOSD schools; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Anthony S. Amato on his selection as Superintendent of the Kansas City, Missouri School District; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Anthony Amato and the Kansas City, Missouri, School District in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for his and the school districts commitment to education in our community.
