RESOLUTION NO. 130681

Commemorating the occasion of the first annual Missouri Classic football game on September 14.

WHEREAS, the first annual Missouri Classic football game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14, 2013; and

WHEREAS, the game will feature two historically black universities, the Grambling State University Tigers from Grambling, Louisiana coached by former Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams vs. the Lincoln University Blue Tigers from Jefferson City, coached by Kansas City native and former Super Bowl participant Mike Jones; and

WHEREAS, the Missouri Classic will be another high profile sporting event for Kansas City, with an estimated economic impact of $2-3 million to our economy; and

WHEREAS, the Missouri Classic is more than just a sporting event since the universities and their alumni will host and participate in other events leading up to the game which will encourage out-of-town visitors to see other entertainment districts in the City such as the 18th & Vine area; and

WHEREAS, the game, which will also feature spectacular halftime performances by the bands of both universities, and associated activities will help familiarize area high school students with the excellent educational opportunities available at Lincoln, Grambling and other historically black colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, the City looks forward to the Missouri Classic becoming a nationally known annual event similar to the State Fair Classic in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas between Grambling and Prairie View A&M University, the Bayou Classic in the Superdome in New Orleans between Grambling and Southern University, and the Gateway Football Classic in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council recognize Al Wash, President and CEO of ALW Entertainment, the promoter of the Missouri Classic as well as the State Fair Classic now in its 31st year, and Oscar McGaskey, Jr., the Director of the Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department who helped bring this exciting game to Kansas City, for their leadership in planning the Missouri Classic; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council and that a copy hereof be presented to Al Wash and Oscar McGaskey, Jr. with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the outstanding job they have done in preparing for this event and with the hopes of the Mayor and Council that this event will continue to be held annually in Kansas City for decades to come.
