RESOLUTION NO. 060334

 

Expressing sympathy on the death of Tony Aguirre.

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri has learned of the passing of Tony Aguirre on Sunday, March 19, 2006; and

 

WHEREAS, the City is proud of its native son, Tony Aguirre, born February 8, 1929, of high integrity, unquestionable character and an advocate for youth; and

 

WHEREAS, Tony Aguirre coached and volunteered at the Guadalupe Centers, Inc., located in the historic Westside neighborhood for more than 50 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Tony Aguirre was affectionately known as FISH by all his friends on the Westside referring to Friendship, Intelligence, Sportsmanship and Honesty; and

 

WHEREAS, in recognition of Tony Aguirres love of sports, education and community service, the Guadalupe Centers, Inc., established in 1988 the Tony Aguirre Scholarship Award which has awarded more than $50,000.00 to assist in the education of deserving young women and men; and

 

WHEREAS, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement with youth, in the year 2000 the City of Kansas City named its Westside community center, the Tony Aguirre Community Center in his honor; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council regret Tonys passing and extend their condolences to his wife of 55 years, Joan, and his four daughters, Sandy Aguirre Mayer, Arlvnne Reiman, Kathy Balke and Amy Craig and his son, Steve Aguirre and the entire Aguirre family; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Tony Aguirre for his contributions to the Kansas City area and that the Council take special note of his death on March 19, 2006; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to his family in token of the sadness felt by the Mayor and Council on this occasion.
