RESOLUTION NO. 110187

 

Honoring High Aspirations for its outstanding mentoring program.

WHEREAS, High Aspirations is a proactive mentoring program that enables young African American males the chance to connect to positive role models, provides them a sense of belonging and security, and most importantly is an answer to their problems; and

 

WHEREAS, High Aspirations is a spiritually-based mentoring program that solely focuses on young African American males between the ages of 8-18; and

 

WHEREAS, this program supports the participants spiritually, socially, emotionally, and academically; and

 

WHEREAS, High Aspirations promotes celibacy, education, leadership, trade, self-respect, and community involvement; and

 

WHEREAS, High Aspirations allows men and women of other races and ethnicities to provide input and resources to the structured programs that are of value to the enrichment and education of the young men, for example, each Saturday of the month there is a different activity to participate in: a chess session, a leadership training, a pre-collegiate program, and a volunteer/construction and trade program; and

 

WHEREAS, mentors for the High Aspirations must be 23 years of age or older, male, and go through a background screening before they are allowed to be a mentor for the program, once this happens, they are expected to be good role models and monitor the participants by calling them at least once a week; and

 

WHEREAS, the participants must demonstrate a commitment by completing the High Aspirations program application and a parent or guardian is expected to be involved and sign the application before the participants are accepted into the program; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor High Aspirations for its outstanding mentoring program; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Henry Wash with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the commitment given to the youth of this community.
