RESOLUTION NO. 140402

 

Honoring Willie Grandison on his retirement after more than four decades of service at The American Restaurant.

 

WHEREAS, Willie Grandison grew up in Louisiana and came to Kansas City wanting something other than a factory job; and

 

WHEREAS, Willie Grandison, has been the bartender at the American Restaurant since it opened on Valentine’s Day in 1974; and

 

WHEREAS, in June 2014, Willie will retire after 40+ years of service at The American, and he will be honored by his colleagues; and

 

WHEREAS, over the years, Willie has welcomed to The American numerous movie stars, well-known politicians and popular musicians with some of his favorites

being Harry Belafonte, Teddy Kennedy, Henry Kissinger and Betty White; and

WHEREAS, Willie was known for inventing a few special drinks, especially the “Stinging Bee”; and

 

WHEREAS, when asked if he calls himself a mixologist or a bartender, Willie replied, “I just call myself ‘doing a good job’”; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Willie Grandison for his four decades of service as the bartender at The American Restaurant; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Willie Grandison with the best wishes of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City on his retirement.
