RESOLUTION NO. 100410

 

Recognizing the month of May 2010, as Older Americans Month.

 

WHERE, in May 1963 President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizen’s Month encouraging the nation to pay tribute in some way to older people across the country; and

 

WHERE, in 1980 a proclamation by President Jimmy Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month; and

 

WHEREAS, the older adults in the City of Kansas City Missouri constitute some of our most valuable resources, bringing their varied perspectives, backgrounds, and life experiences to the fore in enhancing our community; and

 

WHEREAS, the older adults in the City of Kansas City Missouri contribute to the growth and prosperity of our community through their service in the workforce, volunteering in schools, daycare centers, churches, hospitals, residential treatment facilities, neighborhood associations and the homes of other older adults needing assistance to remain in their homes; and

 

WHEREAS, the older adults in the City of Kansas City Missouri deserve recognition, honor, and respect for all they have already contributed to our community and to our nation – and will continue to contribute; and

 

WHEREAS, the 2010 theme for Older Americans Month is “Age Strong! Live Long!” and recognizes “the diversity and vitality of today’s older Americans” who are 55 or older; and

 

WHEREAS, Westport Cooperative Services in partnership with several community partners will host a series of presentations and workshops in honor of Older Americans Month; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the month of May as Older American’s Month; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to a representative or volunteer of the KC Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), Senior Companion Program (SCP), Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Westport Cooperative Services, Mid America Regional Council (MARC), Front Porch Alliance, Hillcrest Community Center and the Missouri State Office Corporation for National, Community Service Senior Corps Programs, and Silver Haired City Council.
