RESOLUTION NO. 140401

 

Declaring May, 2014 as National Drug Court Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, this year marks the 25th Anniversary of the nation’s first Drug Court; and

 

WHEREAS, the nation’s more than 2,800 Drug Courts have served over 1.4 million individuals; and

 

WHEREAS, Drug Courts are now recognized as one of the most successful criminal justice interventions in our nation’s history; and

 

WHEREAS, Drug Courts significantly improve substance-abuse treatment outcomes, substantially reduce drug abuse and crime, and do so at less expense than many other criminal justice strategies; and

 

WHEREAS, Drug Courts facilitate community-wide partnerships, bringing together public safety and public health professionals in the fight against drug abuse and criminality; and

 

WHEREAS, the time has come to put a Drug Court within reach of every eligible person in need; and

 

WHEREAS, the Drug Court operated by the Kansas City Municipal Court has been extremely successful in reducing recidivism and crime in a cost-effective manner while helping offenders put their lives back on productive paths; and

 

WHEREAS, approximately 60% of offenders who appear in Municipal Drug Court successfully complete the program each year, and over 150 persons have graduated from the program since it was formalized in 2007; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May, 2014 as National Drug Court Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Municipal Drug Court Judge Joseph Locascio with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the significant contributions Drug Courts have made over the past 25 years toward reducing substance abuse, crime and recidivism while saving limited public resources.
