RESOLUTION NO. 040876
Honoring those dedicated
to the preservation and continued use of older, historic places of worship in
the greater Kansas City area, regardless of denomination.
WHEREAS, Friends
of Sacred Structures (FOSS), now in its 12th year, works to save from the
wrecking ball our venerable houses of worship (identified by the National Trust
for Historic Preservation as among our most endangered treasures); and
WHEREAS, FOSS is
the only local organization providing aid to endangered churches, such as
inspections, assessments, architectural services, and referrals to contractors
and to sources of affordable building materials; and
WHEREAS, FOSS
also provides educational forums to acquaint the public with the value of older
churches as cultural treasures and as founts of service in their respective
communities; and
WHEREAS, FOSS led
the effort to restore the White Oak Chapel, a church of freed slaves, finding
it a permanent, new home at Strouds Oak Ridge Manor in the Northland,
effecting its complete restoration, and honoring the early congregations
descendants with an impressive ceremony; and
WHEREAS, FOSS has
assisted more than 100 churches, among them: Christ Temple Pentacostal
(formerly Beth Shalom Synagogue), Grace United Queen of the Apostles Church in
St. Joseph, Independence Boulevard Christian Church, Wabash Avenue Church of
God, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Highland Baptist Church, Grandview
Park Presbyterian, Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Dearborn United Methodist
Church, Oak Grove Seventh Day Adventist and Rosedale Congregational; NOW,
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby honor those dedicated to the preservation and continued use
of older, historic places of worship in the greater Kansas City area,
regardless of denomination; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Charlotte Kullman with
the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the
Friends of Sacred Structures devoted efforts toward maintaining the life and
vitality of the treasured, historical houses of worship.
