RESOLUTION NO. 130918, AS AMENDED

 

Expressing the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s support for the creation of an American Jazz Musicians Walk of Fame to be located in the Historic 18th & Vine District in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, the Jazz District Renaissance Corporation was formed in 1997 to continue building upon the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s investment in the Historic 18th & Vine District with the completion of the American Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the GEM Theatre; and

 

WHEREAS, the Jazz District Renaissance Corporation formed the Jazz District Redevelopment Corporation as a wholly owned development subsidiary for the purpose of continuing the redevelopment of the Historic 18th & Vine district; and

 

WHEREAS, the Jazz District Renaissance Corporation has planned for the creation of an American Jazz Musicians Walk of Fame to be built upon the sidewalks in the Historic 18th & Vine District; and

 

WHEREAS, the Jazz District Renaissance Corporation will form a planning and selection committee to plan the inaugural event and select the first five inductees, who are likely to be Kansas Citians; and

 

WHEREAS, inductees will be immortalized upon the sidewalks with each square honoring two inductees to be represented on a terrazzo and brass treble clef note; and

 

WHEREAS, the Jazz District Renaissance Corporation has solicited private foundation funding for the initial startup costs of the inaugural event that includes a major concert featuring nationally known artists and, in some cases, the anticipated inductees themselves; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the City of Kansas City, Missouri supports the creation of an American Jazz Musicians Walk of Fame in the Historic 18th & Vine District and will, subject to the appropriation of funds, annually support the funding of the project as necessary and appropriate.
