RESOLUTION NO. 130839

 

Congratulating Mila Helen Lewis on her 100th birthday.

 

WHEREAS, Mila Helen Lewis was born October 28, 1913, in Mount Vernon, Missouri and received her early education there and completed her high school education in Springfield, Missouri, graduating in 1931; and

 

WHEREAS, Mila began her college education in 1934 at Lincoln University receiving her degree in English and Secondary Education in 1939; and

 

WHEREAS, Mila received her Master’s Degree at Iowa University in 1949 and attended Tucker's Business School in St. Louis, Missouri, where she qualified to work one year in the Public Relations Department for C.C. Darnel; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1940, Mila married Isaiah Banks and worked as a Business Secretary for the YWCA while her husband worked at the YMCA for the Boy’s Club; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1944, the Kansas City School System decided to allow female teachers to teach and so Mila began her teaching career at R.T. Coles with some of the students in her class being Charles J. Briscoe, James Alfred Smith, Al Brooks and Kenneth Ray; and

 

WHEREAS, Mila taught in the Kansas City School District for over 33 years at R.T. Coles, Lincoln Junior, Manuel High School and Westport Jr.; and

 

WHEREAS, Mila is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and always said that she must have been destined to be a Delta because she was born in 1913 and her sorority originated in 1913; and

 

WHEREAS, Mila is also a 72 year member of the Paseo Baptist Church and served as church clerk and was an active member of Sunday School Class #4 for over 40 years and is still active in the Sunday School as well as the Missionary Union; and

WHEREAS, Mila received the 2012 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for exemplary service, dedication and commitment to Lincoln University and its Alumni Association as an educator and was also recognized recently as an outstanding student at Iowa University and will be recognized in its periodical; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Mila Helen Lewis on her 100th birthday; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mila Helen Lewis with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her many years of dedicated service to this community.
