RESOLUTION NO. 120433
Recognizing the 1st Saturday in May as Frank White Day.
WHEREAS, Frank
White, Jr. was born in Greenville,
Mississippi, after attending college at
Longview Community in Lee's Summit, Missouri, he rose through the minors to reach the big leagues; and
WHEREAS, Frank
studied the game, practiced and played on the fields in Spring Valley Park; and
WHEREAS, Frank was
supported in this dream by his family and Frank attributes his success to the
support and influence of his father, Frank White, Sr., with the White Family,
having resided within the Key Coalition neighborhood since its inception; and
WHEREAS, Frank White
Jr. dreamed of playing baseball for his hometown in Municipal Stadium not far
from his childhood home; and
WHEREAS, Frank was
able to live out this dream playing for his hometown team before family,
friends, neighbors, and the world; and
WHEREAS,
Frank as a former Major League Baseball player, and coach for the Kansas City Royals and their AA affiliate, the Wichita Wranglers and
also a former color commentator for Royals telecasts; and
WHEREAS,
as second baseman, Frank was the Most Valuable Player of the American
League Championship Series against the New York Yankees,
leading the Royals to their first World Series
appearance; and
WHEREAS,
Frank was a five-time All-Star
and won the Golden Glove Award
eight times, including six consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1982. Frank retired as a player in 1990 after 18
major-league seasons. In 1995, the Royals retired White's number 20, and he was
inducted into the Royals' Hall of Fame;
and
WHEREAS, Frank White
continues to support and participate in the efforts to keep the Key Coalition
strong; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and
Council hereby recognize the 1st Saturday of May as Frank White Day; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Frank White, Jr., with
the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for his many
years of dedication and service to this community.
