RESOLUTION NO. 980787

 

Directing that the City join the Environmental Protection Agencys Wa$teWi$e program for the purpose of improving and tracking the Citys waste reduction and recycling efforts and increasing the purchase of environmentally preferable products; and initiating a comprehensive waste minimization program for the City.

 

WHEREAS, the State of Missouri has established a goal for the State to reduce the amount of solid waste requiring landfill disposal by 40 percent by January 1, 1998; and

 

WHEREAS, it is good business to reduce the amount and toxicity of waste generated by the City through a comprehensive waste reduction approach; and

 

WHEREAS, the City is in the process of developing a green purchasing policy that will improve purchasing practices from an environmental perspective; and

 

WHEREAS, the disposal of readily recyclable materials is a waste of valuable resources and is inconsistent with the concept of sustainable development as described in the Citys FOCUS Plan; and

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is now offering participation in its established Wa$teWi$e program to local governments; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Council hereby directs that the City join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys Wa$teWi$e program for the purpose of improving the Citys waste reduction, recycling, and environmentally preferable purchasing practices; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of Kansas City hereby expresses its support for the establishment of a comprehensive waste minimization program which will provide for source reduction of hazardous and potentially hazardous materials, and the recycling of large quantities of commonly recycled materials and directs the City Manager to initiate a process that will bring about the implementation of a waste minimization program for the betterment of the City and its residents.
