RESOLUTION NO. 071253

 

Recognizing everyone involved in making the Sprint Centers Grand Opening an unqualified success and for bringing thousands of visitors and residents to Downtown Kansas City for many years to come.

 

WHEREAS, the Sprint Center was conceived by Mayor Kay Barnes, AEG, and City and community leaders in 2003-2004, and was approved by Kansas City voters on August 3, 2004; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sprint Centers land clearing, design, construction, and finish was performed expeditiously and flawlessly; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sprint Center was expertly designed and constructed with outstanding participation from City staff and private partners such as AEG, ICON Venue Group, Sprint, National Association of Basketball Coaches, Bryan Cave LLP, Oppenheimer & Co., M.A. Mortenson, the Downtown Arena Design Team, and all of their sub-contractors, including, PC Sports, Herrfeldt group, and engineers from Walter P. Moore; and

 

WHEREAS, under the leadership of City Manager, Wayne Cauthen, City staff from Parking Services, Public Works, the Capital Improvements Management Office, the Police Department, and others, together with the help of civic and business partners such as the Downtown Council, Standard Parking, Sprint Center staff, Sprint, and the Kansas City Philharmonic, made the Sprint Centers Grand Opening a magnificent event; and

 

WHEREAS, the nine Garth Brooks shows and the broadcast of the finale concert have brought national and international attention to Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize everyone involved from the inception of the idea of the Sprint Center through the construction of the facility to the Grand Opening celebration and wish to convey to them the gratitude of all Kansas City, Missouri residents; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to former Mayor Kay Barnes with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the hard work being done by everyone involved.
