RESOLUTION NO. 060055

 

Saluting the Greater Kansas City Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration, "Unity in the Community: Experience It!".

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. principles of equality and liberty have promoted economic development and equal opportunity for all people across this country and around the world; and

WHEREAS, the 2006 metropolitan Kansas City King Holiday celebration, the second largest King Holiday celebration nationwide, commences on Sunday, January 8th and continues through Monday, January 16, Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday; and

WHEREAS, the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration theme is "Unity in the Community: Experience It! and reflects the goal of bringing people of the Greater Kansas City community together and encouraging everyone to participate in building unity, creating bridges of understanding, and experiencing the joy of a healthy community; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Black Achievers celebrate Dr. King's legacy by providing scholarships to deserving ethnic college students and by recognizing the Kansas City area "Black Achievers" in Business and Industry at the 31st Annual Black Achiever's Scholarship Awards Dinner to be held Thursday, January 12th at the Muehlebach Towers of the Downtown Marriott Hotel; and

 

WHEREAS, other highlights of the Greater Kansas City King Holiday celebration includes a community luncheon featuring nationally recognized trial attorney Willie Gray, Interfaith Services, poetry and music events, and discussion groups on community priorities and issues; and

 

WHEREAS, all Kansas Citians are encouraged to participate in the King Holiday celebration and to remember the past while seeking hope, determination and an opportunity to act upon the promise of the future; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby salute and recognize the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration and the commitment to family, community, peace, justice and the inspiring vision of freedom that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Greater Kansas City Southern Christian Leadership Conference for their support of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s desire to reestablish the community that comes together, stays together, works and prays together.
