RESOLUTION NO. 120632
Declaring
July 17, 2012 as a “Drop Everything And Read” day in Kansas City, Missouri.
WHEREAS,
the Kansas City Freedom Schools Initiative, an alternative, literacy-based
summer program, in partnership with the National Children’s Defense Fund is
celebrating 18 years of providing reading, literacy, leadership and cultural
enrichment, for Kansas City area children through its nationally-recognized,
six-week program; and
WHEREAS,
to highlight the program’s emphasis on the importance of “reading” and building
a solid foundation for life-long learning, the Kansas City Freedom Schools are
calling on the community to join this year’s 900 Freedom School scholars on
Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. for a ten-minute “Drop Everything
And Read” (D.E.A.R.) period; and
WHEREAS,
to observe the Freedom School’s “Drop Everything and Read” daily mantra, we are
asking the Kansas City community to take a 10-minute break from their morning
activities on July 17th to read a book, a magazine, a newspaper, an on-line
article – any type of reading material and to share their experience with the
public via print media, social media or whatever their choice; and
WHEREAS,
Freedom School are partnering with the Carter Broadcast Group, owner of radio
Stations KPRS Hot 103 JAMZ and KPRT Gospel 1590 to encourage community
participation in the July 17th “Drop Everything and Read Campaign;
and
WHEREAS,
KPRS morning show host Julee Jonez will join 900 youth scholars on Friday, July
13, 2012, 9 am to 12 noon at Harvest Church Freedom school; and, 4300 N.
Corrington Ave,
WHEREAS,
part of the Freedom School’s mission is to empower parents, children, young
adults and our community as a whole around the theme “I Can Make A Difference”
in myself, my family, my community, my country, and my world;" NOW,
THEREFORE,
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY
That
the Mayor and Council hereby declare July 17, 2012 as a “Drop Everything And
Read” day in Kansas City, Missouri; and
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the
Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dwayne
Crompton and Rev. Darren Faulkner with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council
and citizens of Kansas City for making a difference in the lives of our
children and this community.
