RESOLUTION
NO. 160285
Supporting
the application to host 2019 sponsored National League of Cities City Summit
and committing staff time, participation on appropriate committees, and
fundraising efforts to fulfill a successful conference that shares the values
of NLC.
WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City,
Missouri values greatly its membership and volunteer roles within the National
League of Cities (NLC);
WHEREAS,
councilmembers support the mission by actively
serving on committees and the national board and these include: Councilman
Jermaine Reed - Board of Directors;
Councilpersons Barnes, Lucas and Wagner - Community & Economic Development
Committee; Councilwoman Katheryn Shields - Energy, Environment and Natural
Resources Committee; Councilwoman Hall - Human
Development Committee; and finally, Councilpersons Fowler and Loar -
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City is
experiencing a phenomenal resurgence of activity and recognition and,
therefore, would be an exciting host city; and
WHEREAS; these accolades that
share the values of NLC include: Convene Magazine’s recognition of Kansas City
as one of the Top 25 Cities “Future Ready”; Huffington Post’s Top 10 Cities for
“Creatives”; Top 5 Innovative Mayors in the Country by Newsweek Magazine; and,
finally, one of the top 12 cities with best practices for small business
development by the National League of Cities; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that
innovation occurs at the local level, but that without a myriad level of
support, cities cannot thrive in an ever-changing world of technology,
transportation models, environmental sustainability methods and evolving
governing paradigms; and
WHEREAS, by hosting National
League of Cities’ 2019 City Summit attendees from all over the country will
receive the opportunity to gather with other cities, learn from and share with
peers and experts; and
WHEREAS, the Summit offers
invaluable opportunities through networking events, mobile workshops,
entertainment, exhibits and sessions on leadership and governance; and
WHEREAS, the Council recognizes
there will be planning requirements and fundraising assistance to the efforts
and commits to creating a metropolitan wide network that will include VisitKC
and other planners to accomplish the goals required; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby support the application to host the 2019 sponsored National
League of Cities City Summit and commit staff time, participation on
appropriate committees and fundraising efforts to fulfill a successful
conference that shares the values of NLC.
