RESOLUTION NO. 010769

 

Supporting the submission by the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Kansas City of a grant application under the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

 

WHEREAS, on July 4, 1804, the 28th birthday of the Declaration of Independence, the Corps of Discovery celebrated the first Independence Day in the Louisiana Purchase in the vicinity of present-day Atchison, Kansas, which is 50 miles north of Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, the theme of A Journey Fourth commemorates the occasion of Lewis & Clarks visit to the Heart of America on July 4, 1804, the first Independence Day of the American West; and

 

WHEREAS, the activities planned for July 3-4, 2004, and the multitude of pre- and post-commemorative events throughout the Kansas City area, will provide an opportunity for a diverse cross section of Americans to express their thoughts and views on how independence and democracy have affected this nation since Lewis & Clark opened the West for settlement; and

 

WHEREAS, the theme of Heart of America: A Journey Fourth will welcome visitors to the Kansas City area and will present visitors with a variety of commemorative events, programs and educational materials incorporating cultural and ethnic diversity, re-enactments, and historical aspects of the Lewis & Clark Expedition; and

 

WHEREAS, to commemorate the Corps of Discoverys observance of July 4, 1804, and the first Independence Day celebration in the American West, Kansas City will host A Journey Fourth, a two-day event on Saturday, July 3, and Sunday, July 4, 2004; and

 

WHEREAS, more than 250,000 people will attend a spectacular fireworks display over the Missouri River on July 4 at the Downtown Kansas City Airport highlighting the statue at Clarks Point; and

 

WHEREAS, the Convention and Visitors Bureau will prepare and submit a project proposal together with an application under the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for a grant-in-aid of 50 percent of the total cost of promoting the Kansas City celebration of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commemoration; and

 

WHEREAS, if a grant is awarded, the Convention and Visitors Bureau accepts all responsibilities under the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission regulations; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby support the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Kansas Citys execution of all necessary documents for forwarding the project proposal application for a grant-in-aid under the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission.
