RESOLUTION NO. 110381

 

Declaring May 16-20, 2011, as Bike Week in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri encourages the increased use of the bicycle, benefiting all citizens of Kansas City by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources, and fostering exercise; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizes the bicycle as a legitimate roadway vehicle and therefore is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roadway facilities in Missouri except where prohibited by law; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizing the use of bicycles as a viable mode of transportation, endeavors to promote safe and responsible bicycling and is committed to incorporating the development of bicycle facilities in the vision for revitalizing downtown Kansas City and supporting livable neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, strives to achieve Platinum designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community by 2020; and

 

WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists have established May as National Bicycle Month and May 16-20, as Bike Week and the Mayor, City Council, Missouri Bicycle Pedestrian Federation, and BikeWalkKC establishes May as Bicycle Safety Month and May 16-20, as Bike Week; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 16-20, 2011, as “Bike Week” in the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Sarah Shipley with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the efforts being made to make bicycling a safe mode of transportation in the community.
