Recognizing October 7-13, 2018, as National Fire Prevention Week and the heroic efforts of the Kansas City Fire Department.

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres. The fire began on October 8th, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9th, 1871; and

WHEREAS, in 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9th falls. This is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation recognizing a national observance during that week every year since 1925; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Fire Department has created a team of Fire Prevention Education Specialists who are available to present fire safety courses to teachers and students allowing for fire education early and often; and

WHEREAS, with the building of the new Fire Station 15 in the 1st District, Kansas City will be even more equipped and ready in the face of fires and devastation in the community; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Kansas City Fire Department serve long hours in order to protect our citizens and we thank you for your sacrifice as you make Kansas City a safer place; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby acknowledge the importance of recognizing National Fire Prevention Week; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Chief Gary Reese, Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of service to our City and their best wishes for all the years to come.
