RESOLUTION NO. 160404

 

Honoring Rosemary Lowe, for a lifetime of committed service to residents of Kansas City, Missouri and recognizing her 90th birthday on May 21, 2016.

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe is a native of Arkansas and since arriving in Kansas City, MO has garnered notoriety through her advocacy and activism in the African American community; and

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe worked tirelessly behind the scenes lending her support to the founding and establishment of the local political group Freedom Incorporated in 1961 and went on to become the first African American Committeewoman in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe has served in various capacities in the community including President of the Santa Fe Neighborhood Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the KC Neighborhood Alliance, Missouri Board of Cosmetology and as a member of the Local Investment Commission; and

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe has been a faithful member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church over 75 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe has been a volunteer throughout Kansas City for organizations such as the American Red Cross at Menorah Hospital and the VA Hospital; and

 

WHEREAS, Rosemary Lowe has been the recipient of the following honors, which recognize her service in the local community: Bruce R. Watkins Foundation Pioneer Award in July 2014, the Harry S. Truman Award in 2004 from the Jackson County Democratic Committee and has a street named in her honor; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Rosemary Lowe, for a lifetime of committed service to residents of Kansas City, Missouri and recognizing her 90th birthday on May 21, 2016; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Rosemary Lowe in recognition by the Mayor and Council for her ongoing service to the local community.
