RESOLUTION NO. 130843

 

Expressing sympathy in the death of Sergeant Gary L. Cooley

 

WHEREAS, Sergeant Gary Cooley was born in Kansas City on July 17, 1970; and

 

WHEREAS, Gary graduated from Englewood Christian Academy as Valedictorian and later Park University awarded him a Bachelors in Business Management; and

 

WHEREAS, Gary’s career with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department began in 1988 as a civilian employee and spanned twenty-five years; and

 

WHEREAS, addressing the issues of crime in our community is difficult and Sergeant Cooley dedicated his career to creative and compassionate approaches; and


WHEREAS, his efforts of working with prisoner reentry led to the partnership of the Kansas City Police Department, Mayor’s offices and others to form KCNova; and

 

WHEREAS, KCNoVa is a new initiative to bring the community and law enforcement together to actively communicate and engage to reduce violence; and  


WHEREAS, Sergeant Cooley played an integral role in KCNoVa by serving as the connection between social service agencies and other resources for offenders at risk; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City will benefit from the efforts of KCNoVa and its strategy to communicate directly with persons involved or associated with violent crime; and

 

WHEREAS, tragically Sergeant Cooley passed away on September 12, 2013, and leaves behind three children, Courtney, Hannah and Caden, parents, his grandmother and two brothers; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby express their profound sorrow on the death of Sergeant Gary Lee Cooley and offer their thoughts and condolences; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Sergeant Cooley’s family in token of the deep and sincere sympathy hereby extended to his colleagues, friends and family.
