ORDINANCE NO. 951410

Congratulating the Full Employment Council and the Platte County Economic Development Council on the success of their "Hiring Fair".

WHEREAS, the Full Employment Council of Kansas City, Missouri, and the Platte County Economic Development Council, in conjunction with the Kansas City, Missouri Aviation Department, sponsored a "Hiring Fair" on Saturday, September 30, 1995, at the Pioneer Campus of the Penn Valley Community College attended by 835 Kansas City residents; and

WHEREAS, the objective of the Fair was three-fold: (1) to address the hiring needs of employers in the KCI area; (2) to assist inner city residents with employment opportunities; and (3) to begin the process of establishing an effective and timely reverse commute transportation program; and

WHEREAS, 15 participating businesses from the KCI area interviewed clients and made offers of employment, resulting in over 120 positions being filled or in the process of being filled as of October 4; and

WHEREAS, as many as ten other businesses from the KCI area have shown additional interest in the program, and have been provided with the resumes of the participating applicants, leading to further anticipated jobs being filled through this program; and

WHEREAS, the "Hiring Fair" was set up to be different from a job fair in that applicants could possibly be employed without delay. This proved to be an effective method with 80 on-the-spot offers of employment; and

WHEREAS, the overwhelming success of this event should serve to erase any doubts as to whether or not persons from the inner city would seek employment in the KCI area, and also whether these Northland employers would seek to hire persons from the urban core; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the Full Employment Council and the Platte County Economic Development Council on the success of the "Hiring Fair"; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Full Employment Council of Kansas City, Missouri and the Platte County Economic Development Council in appreciation of the Mayor and Council for a successful "Hiring Fair", linking the KCI Corridor and the urban core, helping fill the needs in both areas.
