RESOLUTION NO. 180359

Declaring May, 2018 as National Drug Court Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Municipal Drug Court is one of more than 3,000 treatment courts nationwide that have served over 1.4 million individuals; and

WHEREAS, treatment courts are the cornerstone of justice reform sweeping the nation and are now recognized as the most successful criminal justice intervention in our nation’s history; and

WHEREAS, treatment courts significantly improve substance use disorder treatment outcomes, substantially reduce addiction and related crime, and do so at less expense than any other criminal justice strategy, saving up to $27.00 for every $1.00 invested and up to $13,000.00 for every individual they serve; and

WHEREAS, treatment courts improve education, employment, housing and financial stability, promote family reunification, reduce foster care placements, and increase the rate of addicted mothers delivering babies who are fully drug free; and

WHEREAS, treatment courts facilitate community-wide partnerships, bringing together public safety and public health professionals in the fight against addiction and crime; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Municipal Drug Court began in 2002 and was formalized in 2007 and has been extremely successful in reducing recidivism and crime in a cost-effective manner while helping the participants put their lives back on productive paths; and

WHEREAS, treatment courts demonstrate that when one person rises out of addiction and crime, we all rise; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May, 2018 as National Drug Court Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Municipal Drug Court Judge Anne J. LaBella with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the significant contributions Drug Court has made toward reducing substance abuse, crime and recidivism while saving limited public resources.
