RESOLUTION NO. 120414
Honoring
and recognizing the City of Kansas City Missouri’s Facility Management team on
City Hall being designated an ENERGY STAR Certified Building.
WHEREAS, City Hall building has earned the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR certification with this honor being given to
buildings that perform in the 75th percentile nationwide for energy efficiency
and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA; and
WHEREAS, City Hall received an energy efficiency score in
the 92nd percentile, an impressive feat considering City Hall, located at 414
E. 12th St., was built 75 years ago; and
WHEREAS, commercial buildings
that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less
energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere; and
WHEREAS, the City has improved its energy performance by managing
energy strategically in not only City Hall, but at several City facilities and
last year, the City’s General Services Department completed an 18-month Energy
Conservation Project that made sustainable changes and upgrades to City
facilities that conserved energy, improved operations and saved money with City
Hall’s energy consumption being reduced by 14 percent, or approximately
$135,600.00 per year; and
WHEREAS, the EPA’s ENERGY STAR energy performance scale helps
organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to
similar buildings nationwide and a building that scores a 75 or higher on EPA’s
1-100 scale may be eligible for ENERGY STAR certification; and
WHEREAS, ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a
voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through
energy efficiency and today the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60
different kinds of products as well as new homes and commercial and industrial
buildings that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA;
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby extend their most
sincere appreciation and congratulations to the facility management team of
City of Kansas City Missouri for their work, this certification further
demonstrates the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship while also
lowering our energy costs; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the
Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof, and that a copy hereof be
presented to the City of Kansas City Missouri’s Facility Management team with
the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for all the hard work and the
noteworthy achievement of City Hall being awarded the EPA ENERGY STAR
certification.
