Expressing the support of the Council for the formation of an independent coalition to pursue ways to preserve and find alternate uses for the Chouteau Bridge.

WHEREAS, the Chouteau Bridge over the Missouri River in Kansas City, Missouri, has been a vital transportation link in the City's infrastructure for the past 110 years; and

WHEREAS, a new four-lane bridge is being constructed to replace the Chouteau Bridge, which was built in 1887 as a railroad bridge; and

WHEREAS, the Chouteau Bridge is eligible for nomination to the national Register of Historic Places and is the last remaining example of a pinned Whipple-truss structure over the Missouri River; and

WHEREAS, the Chouteau Bridge is the only known Missouri River railroad Whipple-truss bridge converted to handle vehicular traffic, and was ranked second in the State in historical significance by a statewide bridge survey; and

WHEREAS, the Chouteau Bridge served as a pivotal transportation link that helped open new areas to settlement and had a major impact on Kansas City's development; and

WHEREAS, the Chouteau Bridge has historical significance due to its age, type of construction and heritage; and

WHEREAS, the bridge was named after Francois Chouteau, who is considered the father of Kansas City because he built the first fur trading post near the bridge's southern end; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, recognizes the historic significance of the Chouteau Bridge and its importance to the Kansas City community; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission and the Federal Highway Administration have sought to preserve and find alternate uses for the old bridge to perpetuate the proud heritage the bridge represents; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, will continue to work with all those interested in preserving the bridge or portions of the bridge for posterity; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY;
