RESOLUTION NO. 090137

 

Honoring the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on their 40th Anniversary.

 

WHEREAS, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence, provide scholarships, provide support to the underserved, educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in the community; and

 

WHEREAS, the first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Womens Suffrage March in Washington, D.C., in March 1913; and

 

WHEREAS, the major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organizations Five Point Programmatic Thrust which are Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter will celebrate 40 years of public service to the greater Kansas City community on February 20-21, 2009 during its Founders Day observance which will include a public event in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library on Friday, February 20th and a membership luncheon on Saturday, February 21st; and

 

WHEREAS, some of the program initiatives over the past 40 years have included a youth development and scholarship program, health issues impacting women of African descent which focuses on obesity, HIV/Aids, and breast, cervical and ovarian cancers, Annual Women of Courage Awards to recognize outstanding women in the community, voter registration training and candidate forums, an annual youth retreat for girls in grades 5-12, as well as other programs including Habitat for Humanity, reading and enrichment tutorial assistance, Community LINC and Harvesters volunteers; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on their 40th Anniversary; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Charlotte Williams Rice, President, in appreciation by the Mayor and Council for the outstanding work being performed by this Sorority.
