RESOLUTION NO. 060652

 

Honoring the Jackson County Community Health Fund and Mental Health Court for its dedicated service to the community

 

WHEREAS, the Mental Health Court Commission was constituted five years ago by Jackson County Executive Katheryn J. Shields and included members of the City Council of Kansas City, Trustees of the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund, mental health professionals, Presiding Judges of the Sixteenth Circuit, Kansas City Municipal and Lees Summit Municipal Courts, and the Kansas City Police Department, and charged with establishing a Mental Health Court; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chairs of the Mental Health Court Commission, who have included the Honorable Robert Beaird, Diane Cleaver, Richard P. Nadeau, and the Honorable Marsha Campbell, have provided significant time and leadership; and

 

WHEREAS, the Trustees of the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund have steadfastly supported the Mental Health Court as an essential community resource, and have successfully garnered support and involvement from the United States Department of Justice, Jackson County Drug Court, Kansas City Municipal Court, Lees Summit Municipal Court, Swope Health Center, Truman Medical Center, Resource Development Institute, National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Kansas City Municipal Correctional Institution, and many others; and

 

WHEREAS, the Trustees of the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund have placed a priority upon rigorous evaluation of the Mental Health Court, documenting the Courts success in providing more appropriate and effective treatment of the mentally ill offender, and extremely low recidivism; and

 

WHEREAS, the Trustees of the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund, assisted by staff members Dr. Bruce Eddy and Susan E. Jones, continue to provide community leadership on matters of community mental health and diverting persons with mental illness out of the justice system and into treatment; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the Jackson County Community Health Fund and Mental Health Court for its dedicated service to the community; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Jackson County Community Health Fund and Mental Health Court with the congratulations of the Mayor and Council for the dedication to increasing cooperation and coordination between the mental health treatment system and the criminal justice system and improving the quality of life in Kansas City.
