RESOLUTION NO. 130603

 

Supporting Kansas City’s application to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.

 

WHEREAS, the Republican National Committee stages a convention every four years to adopt a national party platform and select candidates for the offices of President and Vice-President of the United States of America; and

 

WHEREAS, the site selection process for the 2016 National Convention is underway and Kansas City, Missouri has enthusiastically expressed interest in being chosen; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City successfully hosted the Republican National Convention in 1976; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City's expertise in facilitating large events has been successfully showcased by hosting the Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship on an ongoing basis, hosting the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Second and Third Rounds, and hosting the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City is conveniently located in the American Heartland and maintains high caliber convention, lodging, entertainment, and dining facilities that complement the outstanding Midwest hospitality of our citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, the above qualities have been recognized recently by the following media outlets: America’s Best Downtowns - Forbes Magazine; Top Destinations in 2012 (only American City) - Frommer’s; One of America’s 50 Best Cities (#15) - Bloomberg Business Week; Top 50 for Meetings and Conventions - Cvent Magazine; Top 5 Innovative Mayors in the Country - Newsweek; 10 Coolest Cities in the Midwest - MSN; 8th Strongest Metropolitan Economy - Policom Corporation; Best Cities for Families (#14) - Parenting Magazine; One of 12 Global Cities to Watch for Innovation - Fast Company Magazine; Top 10 Cities for Young Entrepreneurs 2011 - Under30ceo.com; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council proudly support the application of the Kansas City Host Committee to host the 2016 Republican National Convention; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Kansas City Host Committee and to the RNC Chair Reince Priebus in recognition of the Mayor and Council’s commitment to a successful application and subsequent event.
