RESOLUTION NO. 010088

Welcoming Reverend Herman Skip Mason, Jr. to Kansas City and recognizing him for his participation in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Lambda Chapters Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Herman Skip Mason, Jr., pastor of the Greater Hopewell CME Church and Dean of Students at Morris Brown College is a nationally recognized historian and lecturer, having published over seven books on the African-American experience and will be a keynote speaker at Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Lambda Chapters Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration this weekend; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Mason has authored several books and produced various videos including: Going Against the Wind: A History of African Americans in Atlanta, Black Atlanta in the roaring Twenties, African-American Life in Jacksonville, Florida, The History of Black Entertainment in Atlanta, and History of African-American in DeKalb County, Politics, Law and Civil Rights in Atlanta 1970-1979 and his most recent The Talented Tenth: The Founders and Presidents of Alpha Phi Alpha which chronicles the lives of the founders of the organization and he also is the founder and president of Digging it Up, Incorporated, a nationally recognized African-American research and consulting firm; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Mason writes a weekly column for the Atlanta Daily World Newspaper, History and Heritage page and is a member of the City of Atlanta Urban Design Commission and Chair of the 5th Congressional District Historical Commission for Congressman John Lewis, an icon of the civil rights movement; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Masons memberships include the 100 Black Men of America, the NAACP, the Association for the Study of Afro American Life and History and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby welcome Reverend Herman Mason, Jr. to Kansas City and commend him for his dedication and support of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Lambda Chapters Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Kansas City, Missouri ; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Reverend Herman Mason, Jr. in appreciation of his dedication and support of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Lambda Chapters Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Kansas City, Missouri.
