COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE
FOR RESOLUTION NO. 180149
Directing the City Manager to
promote active shooter training in our local schools.
WHEREAS, since
the deaths of 26 people in the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School
in 2012, there have been at least 239 school shootings across the nation in
which at least 138 people have been killed; and
WHEREAS, on
February 14th of this year, 17 people were killed in a school shooting at
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida; and
WHEREAS, the
tragedy of school shootings continue to occur across the nation; and
WHEREAS, active
shooter training could save lives in the event of a school shooting; NOW,
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Council
directs the City Manager to work with the Police Department to educate local
schools within the boundaries of the City on the opportunities offered for
active shooter training.
