Recognizing and expressing
appreciation to the Honorable Alvin Brooks for his service as Mayor Pro Tem and
At-Large Councilmember from the Sixth District.
WHEREAS,
Councilman Alvin Brooks has proudly served as the Mayor Pro Tem since his
appointment by Mayor Kay Barnes in 1999 and as the At-Large Councilmember from
the Sixth District since his election in 1999 and reelection in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Councilman
Brooks began his six decades journey in 1954 as a detective with the City
Police Department; and
WHEREAS, in 1968, he
organized the Citys Human Relations Department and served as the Departments
first director, while becoming the first African American to serve as a City
department head; and
WHEREAS, he
effectively served in this role until 1984 when he was selected to serve the
City in a new role, Assistant City Manager; and
WHEREAS, in
addition to serving as Mayor Pro Tem, he has served as Vice Chair of the
Aviation Committee and Finance Committee, chaired the Public Safety Committee,
the Police Capital Improvements Oversight Committee and the Police Site
Selection Committee; and
WHEREAS,
Councilman Brooks championed inclusiveness in City contracting and helped the
City experience a renaissance in its urban core; and
WHEREAS, over the
years he has been honored numerous times by many different bodies and
institutions and being named by President George H.W. Bush as one of America's
1,000 Points of Light; and
WHEREAS,
Councilman Brooks life of dedicated service to others has earned him the
acknowledgement, appreciation, and gratitude of the Council; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and
Council hereby extend their wholehearted and genuine appreciation to Councilman
Alvin Brooks for his life of unparalleled service to Kansas City and its
citizens; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council as
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Councilman Alvin
Brooks as a token of the high esteem in which he is held.
