Declaring Friday, April
20, 2001, as Clean Out Your Files Day in Kansas City.
WHEREAS, April 22
is a date celebrated as Earth Day in Kansas City and in more then 250 counties
worldwide and is a day set aside to celebrate our earth connections and to
explore new opportunities for conservation of our natural resources; and
WHEREAS, the City
of Kansas City honors and celebrates Earth Day in many ways including the annual
the Earth Day Walk for Environmental Excellence and Party for the Planet at the
Kansas City Zoological Garden on April 21; and
WHEREAS, the City
desires to participate in a hands on effort to express the commitment of the
Mayor, Council and City staff in the conservation of natural resources and the
encouragement of recycling wherever practicable; and
WHEREAS, Kansas
City has joined as a participant in the National Clean Out Your Files Day
event sponsored by the United States Council of Mayors through the Recycling
Works Program and is working with Jackson County, the Greater Kansas City
Chamber of Commerce and more than 35 other local governments and business who
will put forth a concerted effort to clean out our files and recycle as much
paper as possible in recognition of Clean Out Your Files Day in Greater Kansas
City on Friday, April 20, 2001; and
WHEREAS, City
employees in City Hall and Municipal Court are challenged and encouraged to set
aside Friday, April 20, 2001, as Clean Out Your Files Day and to
set in motion a plan of action to maximize conservation of our natural
resources and the recycling of materials to the fullest extent possible; NOW,
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby declare Friday, April 20, 2001, as Clean Out Your Files
Day in Kansas City and direct the City Manager to implement a plan to
actively participate in Clean Out Your Files Day and to maximize conservation
of resources and space by recycling paper materials recovered wherever
reasonably practical; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, that the City Manager generate a report of the Citys success in this
effort and provide such report to the City Council on or before May 15, 2001;
and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Council encourage other businesses and local
governments to join in this effort initiated by Jackson County Executive
Katheryn Shields , the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Bridging The
Gap, Inc., a non-profit environmental education organization, who serves as
the coordinator of Clean Out Your Files Day in Greater Kansas City; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the
Council.
