RESOLUTION NO. 171001

Recognizing the contributions of young people impacted by the repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

WHEREAS, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors (DREAMers) to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit, has been rescinded, leaving nearly 800,000 DREAMers who met strict age, residency and education criteria, and who did not pose a threat to public safety with an uncertain future; and

WHEREAS, DREAMers have provided confidential information to the federal government, making them vulnerable to aggressive government raids, detention centers, and life-altering deportations; and

WHEREAS, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce held a roundtable highlighting the contributions of DREAMers in our area. More than 6,439 Missourians are currently eligible for DACA. 91.2% of them are employed, contributing $6.6 million to state and local taxes and $11.1 million to federal taxes. The Chamber endorses a quick and permanent solution to support economic growth in our area; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri is a welcoming city and values its ethnic, racial, linguistic, and socio-economic diversity which contributes to our strength and prosperity and we stand committed to ensuring that all our residents can live and pursue their livelihoods in peace and prosperity; NOW, THEREFORE,
