RESOLUTION NO. 991280

 

Designating Friday, October 29, 1999, as Vicki Noteis Cancer Survivor Day in Kansas City and encouraging City employees to wear pink ribbons to work to help raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research to be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Vicki Noteis honor.

 

WHEREAS, Vicki Noteis Cancer Survivor Day is set for Friday, October 29, 1999. Vicki Noteis, Director of the Citys Planning and Development Department, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, has received treatment for breast cancer and is surviving today thanks to the love of her family, the health care she has received and the support of her friends and co-workers with the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women and every woman is at risk for breast cancer. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and the number of women getting breast cancer is increasing, with the greatest increase occurring in younger women; and

 

WHEREAS, many other City employees are also either breast cancer survivors themselves or know of someone who has survived breast cancer, or having lost their lives to breast cancer, live on in the memories of those that love them; and

 

WHEREAS, early detection of breast cancer through breast self-examination or annual screening mammography increases chances for survival; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY;

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby designate October 29, 1999, as Vicki Noteis Cancer Survivor Day in Kansas City and encourage City employees to wear pink ribbons to work to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be given to Bernita Cauthon, Operations Manger in the Action Center and Michelle Maslow, Secretary with the Foster Grandparent Program, Neighborhood and Community Services Department in appreciation for their efforts in the fight against breast cancer.
