RESOLUTION NO. 160057

 

Expressing support for pursuing the Department of Transportation’s “Beyond Traffic” Grant Opportunity; and directing the City Manager to submit the appropriate grant application.

 

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation has announced an opportunity for a cumulative $50 million grant to further Smart City initiatives in the area of transportation; and

 

WHEREAS, the City qualifies in the required areas of population and is currently implementing the biggest Smart City in the United States as approved by the City Council; and

 

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation intends to support a plan that:

 

·         uses and supports technologies furthering connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and integrates concepts leveraging the sharing economy;

 

·         supports City efforts using lost cost, efficient, secure, and resilient information and communications technology and smart land use;

 

·         improves the areas of urban analytics, user-focused mobility services and choices, urban delivery and logistics, strategic business models, and engages connected and involved citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council understands the importance of developing and innovating the City’s transportation infrastructure; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That the Mayor and City Council express their support for all efforts toward the pursuit of the “Beyond Traffic” grant award of $50 million from the Department of Transportation.

 

Section 2. That the City Manager is directed to submit the appropriate grant application to the Department of Transportation and include a copy of this resolution with the application.
