RESOLUTION NO. 090247

 

Urging all Kansas Citians to take part in Earth Hour 2009 by turning off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

 

WHEREAS, Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund which is held annually on the last Saturday of March and asks all households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2008, over 400 cities supported Earth Hour 2008 where it was celebrated on all seven continents with landmarks that included the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, Bank of America Plaza, the Space Needle, the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, the Wat Arun Buddhist Temple in Bangkok, Thailand, the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, the Royal Castle in Stockholm, Sweden, Londons City Hall in England, and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada; and

WHEREAS, the Show Me Your Solutions Campaign is an initiative started by a coalition of conservation and environmental groups and community organizations to raise awareness about the impacts of and solutions to global warming in Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, the Show Me Your Solutions Campaign is designed to show Missourians how they can help prevent climate change by taking action at the local level and also challenging policymakers, including members of Congress, to show Missourians their solutions to climate change; and

 

WHEREAS, the Show Me Your Solutions Campaign includes the following organizations: the Pew Environment Group, American Lung Association, Audubon Missouri, League of Women Voters of Missouri, Missouri Coalition for the Environment, Missouri Farmers Union, Missouri Votes Conservation and National Resources Defense Council and are calling President Obama and members of the Missouri Congress to take bold action to protect the environment by creating a clean energy economy, creating new businesses, industries and jobs in the process and by cutting global warming pollution by 80 percent in the year 2050; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby urge all Kansas Citians to take part in Earth Hour 2009 by turning off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Melissa Hope, Sierra Club, Jill DeWitt, Audubon Missouri, Jim Kottmeyer, Pew Environment Group with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the hard work being done to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
