RESOLUTION NO. 160384

 

Recognizing the Clay County Veterans Court’s first graduating class of 2016, wherein the commencement ceremony took place on May 13, 2016.

 

WHEREAS, the Clay County Veterans Court is one of the very first treatment-diversion-responsibility special courts in Missouri solely for felony-pled veterans; and

 

WHEREAS, Veterans Courts are a cost effective alternative to prison and provides the offender with all of the potential tools to lead and maintain a crime-free lifestyle; and

 

WHEREAS, Clay County Veterans Court goals are to reduce recidivism of offenders, provide early intervention through intensive treatment and supervision, reduce the number of probation revocations to the Department of Corrections and provide a safer community for Clay County residents by successfully treating substance abusing felony offenders; and

 

WHEREAS, graduation requirements for completing each phase of the Clay County Veterans Court program are based on standardized criteria with flexibility for individualized treatment needs; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the first graduating class of the Clay County Veterans Court of 2016 in their accomplishments and completion of the five-phase Veterans Court program; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Honorable Shane Alexander, Presiding Judge, Clay County Circuit Court, Ms. Jill Norris, Court Administrator, Clay County Treatment Courts, and Ms. Kelly Winship, Veterans Administration, Justice Outreach Officer, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their commitment to the City of Kansas City and best wishes in the years to come.
