RESOLUTION NO. 090185

 

Congratulating the University of Missouri-Kansas City on being named to the 2008 Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

 

WHEREAS, on February 9, 2009, during the American Council on Education Annual Conference in Washington, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) was named to the 2008 Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll; and

 

WHEREAS, the Honor Rolls Presidential Award is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, 2008 is the third straight year UMKC has been recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service but it is the first time it has received the top honor; and

WHEREAS, the 2008 Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll means that UMKC students are making a difference in the lives of others every day; and

 

WHEREAS, four of UMKCs programs designed to help Kansas Citys traditionally underserved youth populations were highlighted in the award which included Partnership for Smiles and Great Start through the School of Dentistry, ROOt for Health through the School of Pharmacy and Summer Scholars through the School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, UMKCs vision is to be a model urban research university actively engaged with its city and region and providing students the opportunity to engage with the community through service is a step toward realizing that vision; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the University of Missouri-Kansas City on being named to the 2008 Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Leo Morton, University of Missouri-Kansas City Chancellor, and the universitys students, faculty and staff, in token of the high esteem with which he and the university are held by the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City.
