RESOLUTION NO. 190893

 

Honoring Senator Yvonne Starks Wilson’s legacy of service.

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson served in the Missouri General Assembly for 11 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson is a distinguished graduate of Lincoln High and completed her studies in higher education at Lincoln University of Missouri by receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and minoring in Physical Education; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson continued her educational aspirations and went on to receive a Master of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1971 and an Education Specialist degree in School Administration in 1976; and

 

WHEREAS, Lincoln University recognized Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson’s dedication to education with an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities in 1991; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department renamed its first park after an African American female The Yvonne Starks Wilson Park, a 17-acre park in the Leeds neighborhood where she was born and raised in her honor; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson was the first African-American President of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, Director of the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, President of Spirit of Freedom Fountain Foundation as well as serving on the Board of Curators of Lincoln University; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yvonne Starks Wilson was a member of many committees and organizations including the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBSCL), Missouri Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Executive Committee of the Missouri State Democratic Committee; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Senator Yvonne Starks Wilson’s impactful legacy of service; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ms. Diane Burnett with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her service to the local community.
