RESOLUTION NO. 951283

 

Honoring Debbie Lerner, the National Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

 

WHEREAS, Debbie Lerner, a teacher at Red Bridge Elementary School will receive the National Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year award from the National Council for the Social Studies which is sponsored by the Weekly Reader and carries a $2,500.00 cash prize; and

 

WHEREAS, Debbie Lerner is a stellar teacher who truly believes that all kids can do well and has taught in the Center district for 20 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Debbie Lerner's specialty, personalized learning, emphasizes learning by doing and is known for bringing the community into the classroom and her students into the community; and

 

WHEREAS, the kids develop a passion for being responsible members in their community from their award winning teacher, Debbie Lerner; and

 

WHEREAS, Debbie Lerner helped establish personalized learning, which is based on the idea of "integrated learning" and groups children of different ages in one classroom and uses a common theme to tie the subjects together: and

 

WHEREAS, Debbie Lerner teaches the basics and more importantly her students learn "they can make a difference in this world, that they can help each other. And they can start now."; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby extend to Debbie Lerner their most heartfelt congratulations on being the recipient of the National Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year award and her dedication to her students; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Debbie Lerner with the best wishes of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City.
