Honoring Evert Asjes, Fourth District at Large Councilman, on his departure from office.


WHEREAS, Councilman Asjes was elected to office in 1995 and was re-elected to a second term in 1999; he previously served on the Council from 1981 to 1983, also representing the Fourth District at Large; and


WHEREAS, Councilman Asjes currently serves as chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee and Housing and Community Development Committee, is a member of the Aviation Committee and was appointed to a number of special committees, boards and commissions, including the Kemper Expansion Oversight Committee, Telecommunications Committee, Centertainment Task Force Committee, Kansas City Convention and Entertainment Centers Advisory Authority, Chairman of the Hotel Development Committee, Liquor Control Revisions Committee, Capital Improvements Committee and Board Member of the Economic Development Corporation; and


WHEREAS, prior to his election to the City Council, Councilman Asjes served in various capacities on a number of civic and charitable organizations, including Cubmaster of the Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout, Treasurer of Adolescent Resources Corporation, President of Marillac Center, President of the Center School Board, and Chairman of the Citizens Association; and


WHEREAS, Councilman Asjes is a true statesman and will be fondly remembered for his self-deprecating sense of humor and his quick, sometimes subtle wit, as well as his diplomacy and his tenacity; and


WHEREAS, runners, walkers, and dogs love him for the Trolley Track Trail; homeowners love him for his attention to streets, curbs and sidewalks; sports fans love him for the expanded Kemper Arena; developers love him for his ability to listen, compromise and get things done; and everyone loves him for the streetlights; and


WHEREAS, Councilman Asjes leadership and integrity will shine as a lodestar for future leaders of the City and his reasoned approach to legislating and enhancing this beautiful City will be sorely missed (especially at budget time); NOW, THEREFORE,




That the Mayor and Council hereby extend their heartfelt appreciation for his decisive actions, his civic-mindedness and the countless hours and dedicated service that Councilman Evert Asjes has given to Kansas City and its citizens as the Councilmember for the Fourth District; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council as testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Councilman Evert Asjes as a token of the high esteem in which he is held by the citizens of Kansas City.
