RESOLUTION NO. 981496

 

Commending the Missouri National Guard for the Show Me Challenge Program and their effort to positively redirect at-risk youth.

 

WHEREAS, the Missouri National Guard Show Me Challenge Program goal is to significantly improve the life skills and employment potential of youth who cease to attend secondary school before graduating; and

 

WHEREAS, the program is a 22 week residential program, living and training in a military environment, with a one-year post residential mentoring component for youth 16 to 18 years of age which is a preventative rather than a remedial youth at risk program that will focus on developing discipline and responsibility; and

 

WHEREAS, the residential phase is located at Camp Clark in Nevada, Missouri, with no cost to the student and no military obligation to students who enroll in the program; and

 

WHEREAS, key core curriculum components of the residential program include: citizenship, GED enrollment, life coping skills, community involvement and service projects, health and hygiene, skills training and career exploration/planning, leadership development, teamwork, conflict resolution and physical training; and

 

WHEREAS, students selected for this program must volunteer, be 16-18 years of age, a citizen or legal resident of the United States and a resident of Missouri, be free from the use of illegal drugs or substances, not on parole or probation, not indicted or charged, and free of felony convictions or capital offenses, capable of passing a military physical examination with reasonable accommodations made for physical or other capabilities, a high school drop out, willing to comply with program regulations including random drug testing, and most importantly, have a desire to be challenged physically, emotionally, psychologically and academically; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council commend the Missouri National Guard for the Show Me Challenge Program and their effort to positively redirect at-risk youth; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Missouri National Guard for the Show Me Challenge Program in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their effort and positive effect on the entire metropolitan region.
